Saltworks

About Saltworks

In the late 1970's, Saltworks started at DeAnza College where it continued until the early 1990's. About ten years later in 2002, Saltworks surfaced again at DeAnza College. We have at this time expanded onto 2 other campuses, West Valley College in 2003 and San Jose State University in 2005. Our goal is to reach out to the local Colleges in the South Bay Area.

Saltworks consists of vibrant young men and women who are excited about what God is doing in their lives and enjoy sharing Him with others. Besides being active on the campuses of DeAnza, West Valley, and San Jose State, we offer the Friday Night Thing. This takes off on Friday nights when everyone gathers together for a time of more in-depth Bible study and fellowship. Other activities we hold include the Mountain Rendezvous in August, the Winter Retreat in February and the Summit in May.

Why Saltworks?

"Why do you call yourselves Saltworks? What does that mean?" That's a question that sometimes comes up. What's the answer?

Jesus said, "Salt is good... have salt in yourselves" (Mark 9:50). He called His followers "the salt of the earth" (Matthew 5:13). What did Jesus mean by this?

Salt contains some of the basic ingredients necessary for life itself. It has many properties that were created to bring blessing. For example salt is used as a seasoning to provide flavor to what otherwise might be a very bland meal. By its presence it actually enhances other flavors such as sweetness and causes them to stand out as well.

What does my life taste like? Is it bland? Or do others sense Jesus living through me and taste and see that He is good?

Salt acts as a preservative. In much of the world today salt is added to certain foods to preserve them. It stops corruption and stays the spread of impurities. Basically it keeps things from rotting.

Does my life have a preserving influence in this world? Does the salt in my sweat and tears demonstrate I have a heart that cares?

Salt purifies and brings healing. Why else do you gargle with saltwater? To cleanse and heal your throat.

What about what comes out of my mouth? Are the words I speak pure? Do they bring healing? Are they seasoned with grace?

Salt melts ice. The freezing cold can not stop salt from penetrating through to do its work.

Do I faithfully share the love of Jesus with those trapped within their frozen hearts? When they don't respond do I keep loving them just as Jesus keeps loving me?

Salt causes thirst.

Is my life such that others thirst for what I have? After spending time with me do they want to drink from the Water of Life? Do they know they can be filled and satisfied by the Savior?
